The circulating claim: taking an antibiotic at the first sign of a cold speeds recovery. Verdict: false.

The evidence: colds are caused by viruses, and antibiotics are designed to attack bacteria exclusively; they have no effect on the course of a viral infection. Worse, unjustified use fuels resistant bacterial strains — ranked by global health bodies among the greatest threats to modern medicine.

Bottom line: rest, fluids, and fever reducers when needed. Antibiotics only on a doctor's decision, when a bacterial cause is likely.
