Terms of Use

By using this site you accept these terms. We kept them short and in plain language because we want them actually read, not scrolled past; they apply to every page and service of the site in all nine of its languages.

The service

Voice of the Citizen is a news platform you read for free: no account, no subscription, and no payment in data — the site sets no cookie of any kind on a reader's browser, as the privacy policy explains in detail.

We provide RSS feeds in every language for anyone who prefers to follow from their own reader, and a newsletter whose subscription is double opt-in and whose cancellation is one click from any mail.

Our content and your right to use it

The texts, images and design we publish are the property of Voice of the Citizen unless stated otherwise at the material itself.

You may quote from our work within customary limits, on two conditions we do not waive: explicit attribution to us, and a link leading to the original piece. Republishing an entire article requires our prior written permission.

Search-engine indexing of the site under its robots.txt is welcome, as is using the feeds in personal readers. Large-scale automated harvesting of the content beyond that is not within the licence granted here.

What you contribute

  • What you send through the Voice of the Citizen page must be true to the best of your knowledge, yours to send, and free of private details about other people who have not consented to their mention.
  • A photo is attached under your explicit declaration that you took it or hold its rights, and that you grant us the right to publish it credited to Citizen Lens — the same declaration you sign in the form before uploading.
  • Sending a report does not oblige us to publish or adopt it; the desk decides under its published policy, and either way your reference number lets you follow what became of it.
  • Following a report by its reference number exposes nobody's personal data — your identity stays protected even while you follow the case.

What our content is not

What we publish is journalism, not advice: do not treat our legal, health or financial coverage as a professional's opinion on your own situation — every case has particulars no article knows.

Fact-check verdicts are issued on the evidence standing at publication, under a published methodology; if something new overturns a verdict we correct it in the open, as the corrections policy requires — we do not delete, and we do not pretend the error never happened.

Acceptable use

  • Do not use the site or its services for any unlawful purpose, and do not impersonate the platform or anyone working for it.
  • Do not attribute to us what we did not publish, and do not distort a quotation of ours into meaning its opposite.
  • Do not attempt to disrupt the service or evade its technical usage limits — they exist so the service stays available to everyone.
  • Do not send abusive or unlawful content through the site's forms, or reports you know to be false; that burns time that belonged to an honest report.

External links and the limits of liability

We may point to external sites as source or context; we control nothing they publish, and pointing is not endorsement.

We take the care our published policies commit us to, but the service is provided as it is: it may pause for maintenance or failure, and a piece may carry an error we have not yet caught. Our liability for that is limited to the fullest extent the applicable law allows, and we do not answer for decisions taken on a piece of journalism without independent verification.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and its competent courts have jurisdiction over any dispute.

Changing these terms

We may revise these terms when something that warrants revision changes, and the date of the last revision is always shown at the top of this page. Continuing to use the site after a revision is published means you accept it.

No revision will change the basic bargain: reading stays free, and what the privacy policy promises is not undone by a line on another page.

Reaching us

Until the ownership and contact pages are published with the publishing entity's details and address — both are in preparation — the Voice of the Citizen page remains the official channel for anything concerning these terms; it works, and it is answered with a reference number.
