Cada año, miles de egipcios pierden la vida en las carreteras. Las causas están documentadas —exceso de velocidad, vehículos en mal estado, una aplicación intermitente de la ley— y también lo están las soluciones que han reducido drásticamente las muertes en otros países. Una lectura de lo que dice la evidencia científica, y de por qué ninguna muerte en la carretera es un destino inevitable.

Road crashes are one of the most consistent killers in Egypt. Year after year, official statistics count thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of injuries on the country's roads — a toll that arrives not as one shocking event but as a steady drip of individual tragedies, each mourned privately and quickly forgotten publicly. The World Health Organization classifies road traffic injury as a leading cause of death worldwide for children and young adults, and Egypt is no exception to that grim pattern.

The deaths are only part of the cost. For every person killed, many more are injured, some permanently disabled. Families lose breadwinners in a moment; households slide into poverty paying for treatment. Globally, the WHO has estimated that road crashes cost countries around three percent of their gross domestic product. A crash on the ring road is a private catastrophe, but summed across a year it is also an economic wound the country keeps reopening.

The first documented risk factor is speed. The physics are unforgiving: the energy of a collision rises steeply with velocity, and WHO analyses indicate that even small increases in average speed translate into sharply higher risks of fatal crashes. Long, straight desert highways invite speeds the human body cannot survive, and a pedestrian struck at high speed has little chance. This is why speed management — limits, engineering and cameras — sits at the centre of every serious road safety strategy.

The second factor is the vehicle itself. Anyone who travels between governorates has seen them: microbuses on bald tyres, trucks loaded far beyond capacity, ageing vehicles kept in service long past a safe lifespan. Brakes, tyres, lights and steering fail more often on poorly maintained vehicles, and when they fail at highway speed the result is rarely minor. Regular, honest technical inspection — not a stamp bought in a queue — is a life-saving institution wherever it is applied seriously.

The third factor is human behaviour, and fatigue above all. Long-haul drivers working brutal hours fall asleep at the wheel; the microbus driver on his fourth round of the day is a hazard to everyone aboard. Add phone use behind the wheel and the picture darkens further. None of this is unique to Egypt — but the combination of long night routes, economic pressure to keep driving, and thin supervision of professional drivers is a documented recipe for disaster.

Fourth: enforcement that is intermittent rather than certain. Deterrence research is clear — what changes behaviour is not the severity of a penalty but the offender's certainty of being caught. Seat belts and helmets cut the risk of death dramatically; the WHO puts the reduction for belted front-seat occupants at close to half. Yet compliance collapses wherever drivers learn that checks are rare or negotiable. A rule enforced only occasionally functions, in practice, as mere advice.

Finally, the road itself and those on foot. Pedestrians crossing high-speed roads where no bridge or crossing exists, missing barriers between opposing traffic, unlit stretches, sudden unmarked roadworks — road design decides how much a moment of human error costs. Egypt's massive road-building programme of recent years has widened and resurfaced thousands of kilometres, and safety experts everywhere agree the same investment logic must extend to crossings, lighting, barriers and the daily maintenance that keeps them working.

What works is no mystery; it has been measured. 'Vision Zero,' adopted by Sweden in 1997, reframed road deaths as system failures rather than individual misfortunes: since humans will always err, roads, speeds and vehicles must be designed so that error is not fatal. Countries applying this 'Safe System' approach — median barriers, roundabouts instead of high-speed junctions, and speeds matched to each road's function — have pushed deaths relative to population down to a fraction of the levels seen elsewhere.

Consistent enforcement multiplies every other measure. Automated speed cameras that work every day, random driver testing, sustained seat-belt campaigns backed by fines, and licensing that makes new drivers earn full privileges gradually — these are the tools with the strongest evidence base. They share one feature: predictability. Drivers adjust to what is reliably enforced, and a camera that never sleeps changes behaviour more than a checkpoint that appears once a month.

The chain does not end when the crash happens. Survival often depends on what occurs in the first hour: bystanders who know basic first aid, an ambulance that arrives quickly, an emergency unit ready to receive. Egypt's ambulance service answers at 123, and strengthening emergency response — arrival times, equipment, trauma training — is one of the most cost-effective ways any country reduces road deaths, because it saves the people the road has already failed.

Egypt has moved on several fronts: successive updates to traffic legislation, expanded camera enforcement on major axes, and the largest road-construction programme in its history. The experience of other countries suggests the next dividends lie in the unglamorous parts — vehicle inspection with integrity, working-hour limits for professional drivers, pedestrian infrastructure, and enforcement that citizens experience as constant and impartial rather than seasonal.

Road safety is a cause in the fullest sense of the word: a preventable epidemic with known treatments. Each of us controls a share of it — the belt fastened before moving, the phone left in the pocket, the speed that respects physics. But the world's lesson is that individual virtue alone is not public policy. Societies that cut their road deaths did so by designing systems in which the safe choice is the easy one, and by treating every death not as fate, but as evidence demanding correction.
